The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) got tired of charging around the Berkeley hills trying to figure out who what bush the micropower broadcasters were behind. The local FCC field office agents asked District Court Judge Claudia Wilken for an injunction to stop the broadcasts on the grounds that they were doing 'irreparable harm' to...somebody.
But Judge Wilken said, hmmm. She responded that there was a free speech issue in play. And scheduled the issue for ...years later.
The FCC did finally get their injunction, but in the interim thousands of micropower broadcast stations were launched, and the FCC is still struggling to institute new rules which would somehow include some, exclude others, etc.
Free Radio Berkeley had years to enjoy inviting everyone in the community to be on the air-- to read recipes and talk about cooking, to make live traffic reports from the seat of a bicycle, to play music live with their friends, to read poetry, and to cover the week's events in their community, as Laura Drawbridge (Carol Denney) did weekly, giving local officials and civic leaders the full comic treatment. Enjoy these, the original transcripts from the Free Radio Berkeley archives.
